You can find the cheapest accommodation in the streets around Grand Mosquee in the northeastern side of the medina. They all charge from $4,$5 up to $10. Here's a short view:

-Ht Gabes (on 12 Rue de Paris)
-Ht Residence Sarra (227 737 on Rue du Rempart Nord)
